Guest Blogger: Femke!

by daniel on Jan.23, 2010, under Furious World Guests

DSC_0059The amazingly talented Femke was on our show in November.  She had this to say about the experience:

The first time I met Peter was at a Workshop organized by ASCAP.  ASCAP handpicked 14 songwriters and put us all in a room to meet the best of the best in the music industry in Los Angeles. Our first real workshop was with Peter.

He told us about his life, secrets of writing, guitars, his family and much more.  I must say, maybe in the beginning I felt a bit scared yet excited, in a group with strangers, listening to someone who has already experienced it all, I didn’t really know what to say, so I basically said nothing, that always works well for me.

At some point he gave us an assignment to write a song in 30 minutes, with one other person in the group. I ended up in a room with Jocelyn, a very talented writer and amazing singer, we put our heads together, and voila… somehow there was a song.  And of-course we all had to present our song and this evening turned out to be one of the best that we had from the ASCAP workshop. There is no better way to get to know each-other then by listening to each-others songs and experiences.  A great way to break the ice between all of us and an amazing start for a wonderful workshop.

DSC_0036After that, I contacted Peter and he invited me to play in his show, how cool was that, I got to play a few originals, watch a pro do an amazing job in performing songs, talked about vegetables in Dutch taught Peter how to say the word potato in Dutch, (I hope you still remember, it’s AARDAPPEL! )

It’s good to know that when you travel thousands of miles to make your dreams come true, music is a language that we can all speak, no matter where you are from.

XO Femke

Thanks for the kind words, Femke!  It was a pleasure having you on the show!  For anyone wanting to hear more of Femke’s music, check out her website or her youtube channel.

Tim Westergren on the Furious World

by daniel on Jan.14, 2010, under Furious World Guests

Tim WestergrenIt was a priviledge to have Tim Westergren on our show; he’s the founder and creator of Pandora, the popular music website.  He’s also a composer and producer with lots of experience in the industry; Tim now spends his time traveling the country, doing research for the Music Genome Project and spreading the word about Pandora.  He had this to say about his experience on our show:

About a year ago Peter Himmelman came to Pandora for one of our midday office concerts at our makeshift stage/club. Most musicians when they perform live stick to a tried and true script.  They play songs they’re comfortable with, well-practiced segues, even the jokes are the same. They know what works and it’s easy. That’s true of most public performers.  Partly it’s a function of raw material – it’s hard to continually make new stuff, and there’s always a huge fear of a train wreck if you try enter untrod territory.  No such thing with Peter. He performed with no net.  It’s clear that he relishes the spontaneity – and he’s someone who performs a lot, so it’s not like he’s saving stuff up. As a listener it was really refreshing. And it turns out, par for the course, as  I got another dose of it during the podcast I had the pleasure of participating in.

One of the challenges with technology is to avoid using it as a crutch. I’ve spent a lot of time around recording studios and the latest software technology (Peter’s got a pretty sweet setup himself at home). There’s really nothing you can’t do with sound anymore. My last band spent 3 weeks sequestered at a recording studio recording a dozen songs. It was great fun. Shortly after the retreat we played a live show in SF.  We stunk.

I hope audiences will celebrate and support the artists who stretch themselves and keep burning the creative candle.  Sometimes it will sound like crap.  But sometimes.. often, it’s sublime.

Bravo, Peter.

Tim (Founder, Pandora)Tim Westergren

Tim- it was a pleasure meeting you and having you on our show!

If you want to check out Pandora, head on over to pandora.com and setup a free account.  It’s a great way to discover artists that sound like things you’re already listening to.  They have millions of tracks, artists, and styles!  I was just reading checking out Pandora One, which has tons of great additional features at the ridiculously low price of $36 a year.
